Local Information
There is much to see and do in Westray. The Airfield is on your doorstep and offers the chance to obtain a coveted certificate to fly on the shortest scheduled flight in the world. The short hop between Westray and Papa Westray is billed to take 2 minutes but can be achieved in much less – if the wind is in a favourable direction.
Most visitors want to see the Lighthouse and the Castle and you can find out more about them in the Heritage Centre in Pierowall. The Centre also displays more ancient relics such as the Westray Stone and has details of other significant finds that archaeologists have uncovered more recently. The consolidated site at Quoygrew helps us imagine how the Vikings lived when they were here.
Islanders are traditionally ingenious and that continues today with a wide range of crafts available. Our closest Gallery is the Wheelingsteen just a short walk along the road where you can enjoy a snack while browsing the photos and artwork.
Another Café, the Haff Yok, is in the village and is also the base for tours of the island. Evening Puffin Tours are popular during the months when those comical birds visit. Sightseeing tours by boat are also available, or a fishing trip if you prefer.
Children will enjoy the playpark and swimming pool at the school while the gym is available if indoor exercise is required.
Food is another attraction here in Westray. We have our own Bakehouse which supplies bread and biscuits far and wide. Fish and shellfish couldn’t be fresher and there is an equally short supply chain for beef.
You will find more details on services and facilities on the Tourist Association’s website .
